Und plötzlich fehlt die Welt

Man vergisst.

Vielleicht weil selbst Trauer irgendwann kurz Luft holen muss.

Dann sitzt man da.

Trinkt etwas.

Fast.

Bis man sich erinnert.

Er ist weg.

Und mit diesem Gedanken verschwindet der Boden.

Einfach so.

Man fällt.

Man schwebt darin.

Stunden.

Minuten.

Sekunden.

Tage.

Alles gleichzeitig.

Erbarmungslos.

Menschen gehen einkaufen.

Autos fahren.

Irgendwo lacht jemand.

You forget.

Not him.

Never him.

You only forget, for a moment, how much it hurts.

Maybe because the body cannot remind you of it every single second.

Maybe because even grief has to stop and breathe for a while.

Then you sit there.

Drink something.

Look out of the window.

Hear a sound.

Think about something completely insignificant for a few seconds.

And suddenly there is this tiny moment in which everything almost feels normal.

Almost.

Until you remember.

He is gone.

And with that thought, the ground disappears.

Just like that.

As if someone had pulled the whole world out from under your feet.

You fall.

Not quickly.

Not in a way that ends somewhere.

That might almost be easier.

You fall into a black hole with no bottom.

You hover there.

Hours.

Minutes.

Seconds.

Days.

All at once.

Time does not work there.

Sometimes a single minute lasts so long that you think it must eventually break apart.

And sometimes you suddenly realize that hours have passed without being able to say where you were during that time.

Maybe you were simply somewhere between knowing that he is no longer there and desperately trying, for one moment, not to feel that knowledge.

Then the next wave comes.

Mercilessly.

Without warning.

A thought.

A place.

A sound.

A movement.

Something that meant nothing before.

And suddenly it is everything.

You look into the mirror.

You recognize the face.

Of course you do.

And yet you do not see yourself.

Someone is standing there.

With your eyes.

Your mouth.

Your body.

But something is no longer right.

As if a ghost were looking back at you, wearing your face by accident.

You know you are there.

And at the same time, you feel as though you have disappeared somewhere.

Outside, everything keeps moving.

People go shopping.

Cars drive past.

Someone is laughing somewhere.

Someone is annoyed about something ridiculous.

Someone is making plans for next week.

Someone is asking what there will be for dinner.

And you cannot understand how that is possible.

How can the world simply keep going?

How can the sky still look exactly the same?

How can a bird still be singing somewhere?

How can anything still be ordinary?

Sometimes I stare into the distance and think:

If the whole world collapsed over there right now, I would not care.

Not because I do not want my life.

But because my world already feels as though it has collapsed.

And then people might say:

You lost your dog.

And I know they do not mean it badly.

But those words do not fit.

They are far too small.

Dog.

As if that word could explain who Attila was to me.

As if it could describe how close another being can come to you.

How deeply they can live inside you.

How naturally their presence becomes part of your own life.

Attila was not simply beside me.

He was woven so deeply into my life that I did not even know how much of me was connected to him.

Until he was gone.

Soulmate.

The love of my life.

Even those are only words.

And right now I realize how poor words can be.

Because none of them can explain what happens when exactly that being is suddenly no longer there.

What are you supposed to do with a love that is still completely intact when the one it belongs to is gone?

Where do you put all of it?

The automatic glance toward his place.

The thought you would have shared with him.

The hand that wants to touch him.

That inner certainty:

Someone should be there.

Someone was always there.

And now there is nothing.

Sometimes I have asked Papa to bring me back to Attila.

Not because I want to hurt myself.

But because sometimes pain knows only one thought:

I want to be with him.

Not away.

With him.

To feel his head again.

His warmth.

That feeling that he is simply there.

Just once more, not having to understand that there is no more once more.

Maybe that is the cruelest part.

That the mind knows.

And something inside you still refuses, again and again, to understand.

Then you forget again for a few seconds.

You breathe.

You look somewhere else.

And for that one tiny moment, you are standing on solid ground again.

Until it comes back.

That knowledge.

Attila is not here.

And you fall again.
